Internal Medicine vs. Family Medicine: Which Doctor Is Right for You?

    July 23, 20265 min read

If you've searched for a primary care doctor in Huntington Beach, you've probably seen both "internal medicine" and "family medicine" physicians. Both provide primary care — but their training and focus are different, and knowing the difference helps you choose the right fit.

What is an internal medicine doctor?

Internal medicine physicians (internists) train exclusively in adult medicine. Their residency is spent entirely on adult patients — often in hospital settings managing complex, overlapping conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, COPD, and kidney disease at the same time.

That depth in adult health is why internists are often the preferred choice for adults managing one or more chronic conditions, and for older adults on Medicare whose care involves multiple specialists and medications.

What is a family medicine doctor?

Family medicine physicians train across all ages — pediatrics, obstetrics, and adult care. Their strength is breadth: one doctor for the whole household, from toddlers to grandparents.

    Which should you choose?

If you're an adult — especially one managing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, asthma, or sleep problems — an internal medicine physician offers training focused specifically on your stage of life.

Dr. Ameer Moussa at Coral Med is board-certified in Internal Medicine with additional certification in Sleep Medicine, and cares exclusively for adults 18 and older in Huntington Beach. He trained at Long Island College Hospital, UCLA Olive View, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and serves patients in English, Arabic, and Spanish.
